Following on from our wine study, trips to vineyards

Caño,
Bodega Vina Bajoz, DO Toro, Spain. 2003 13.5% Vol.
Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) and Garnacha together make this
easy drinking wine from the Toro region of Spain. Situated
on a high plain above the Duero river, it is hot in the summer
and cold in the winter. Modern methods combined with enthusiastic
farmers and a young team of keen winemakers ensure an excellent
product.
Escobera
Crianza, Jumilla, DO Valencia, Spain. 2001 13.5% Vol.
From the east of Spain next door to the massive area of La
Mancha. Extremely hot summers, so careful husbandry is required.
Wines from this region have improved immensely over the last
decade, with huge sums of money being invested in the vineyards
and cellars. Made from Monastrell and Syrah. The wine is rich
and intense with cooked fruit aromas, notes of vanilla and
smoke come from the oak ageing. (1 bottle)
Vina Bajoz,
Ovacion, Rueda, DO Spain. 2003 13.5% vol.
Made from 100% Verdejo, a grape native to Rueda. Situated
just south of Valladolid. One of the best white grapes in
Spain and here where the vineyards are up to 900 metres high
and are cool and damp it produces an intense fruit driven
crisp wine with excellent acidity and a long finish . Drink
at any time.
Casa de la
Ermita, Jumilla, DO Murcia, Spain. 2003 14% Vol.
Inland from Alicante in the Carche Valley, a protected natural
park. High temperatures in summer and down to freezing level
in winter, very dry with poor soil, perfect for vine cultivation.
100% Monastrell, garnet in colour. Full bodied with blackberries
and liquorice, Soft mature tannins and a long finish. Great
with casseroles and game. Made from organically grown grapes.
Martius Negre,
Montsant, DO Falset-Marca, Spain. 2003 13.5% Vol.
Two hours drive south of Barcelona nestling in the hills adjacent
to the famous Priorat area, lies the co-operative of Falset
Marca. With a free hand with varietals they have come up with
a wine that appeals to the modern consumer. Grenache, Carignan
Syrah and Tempranillo is the mix. An intense vibrant colour
with perfumed red fruits, spice and some vanilla oak. A full
bodied palate with sweet ripe tannins and balanced acidity.
Criadores,
Monte Clavijo, Rioja, DOCG Spain. 2004 11.5% Vol
A rosé wine from the well respected Rioja area. 100%
Garnacha. Delicate red fruit aromas and dry crisp red fruit
flavours. Simple well made refreshing rosé, best with
fish, pasta or on its own. (1 bottle)
Bodega Mustiguillo,
Mestizaje, Utiel Requena, Spain. 2003 13.5% Vol
It is Antonio Sarron’s goal to make Mustiguillo one
of Spain’s top estates and he is well on his way, since
his debut in 2000. This wine is made from 50% Bobal, the other
50% is a cocktail of Garnacha, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Tempranillo. Aged in barrique for eight months prior to
bottling. |

La
Petite Ferme, Sauvignon Blanc, Franschhoek, South Africa.
2003 12.5% vol.
Coming from a “restaurant with vineyard”, this
boutique winery produces small quantities of wine mainly to
supply the restaurant in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley.
There is a lot of French influence in the area. Try this superb
grassy Sauvignon Blanc. Great at any time.
Kloovenburg,
Chardonnay, Swartland, South Africa. 2003 14.5% vol.
Small family run vineyards set in the Swartland region. Old
World style Chardonnay with elegant butter lime notes, great
elegance, balance and length. Food friendly wine with a touch
of oak.
Jordan, Chenin
Blanc, Stellenbosch, South Africa. 2003 14% vol.
Family run winery established for only 10 years situated in
the Stellenbosch region. The Jordan family’s total involvement
has lead to this winery’s phenomenal success. The Chenin
Blanc is from mature vines, barrel fermented for 6 months
on the lees. Spicy, peachy/pear flavours and waxy texture.
Will improve with cellaring
Graham Beck,
Pinotage, Coastal Region, South Africa. 2003 14% Vol.
A large concern but the Graham Beck wineries have won the
reputation for being one of the most astute yet quality driven
operations on the Cape. This Pinotage from the Franschhoek
winery is made from hand picked grapes, made in open fermenters
and matured in oak, gives a ripe cherry and tropical fruit
nose and spicy fruity flavours. A good balance and fine finish
(one bottle)
Springfield
Estate, Cabernet Sauvignon, Robertson, South Africa. 2002
14% vol.
An Estate Wine is the highest echelon of vineyards in South
Africa. It means that the actual vineyard is a recognised
area. Only grapes from that area can be used in the wine.
This wholeberry wine is made without crushing the grapes to
produce a soft velvety wine with varietal characteristics
and a smooth finish.
Jordan, Cabernet
Sauvignon/Merlot, Stellenbosch, South Africa. 2003 14% Vol.
This Bordeaux mix has a little Cabernet Franc in it. The wine
has quite assertive qualities. It is rich with berry flavours
and soft ripe tannins. Barrel maturation has added some spicy
complexity. Will keep till 2007.
Graham Beck,
Brut, Chardonnay/Pinot Noir, Robertson, South Africa. 13%
Vol.
A Champagne mix of grapes make Graham Beck sparkling wines
one of the Cape’s real delights. Made with tremendous
skill and finesse this sparkling wine is more than a match
for most lower priced Champagnes. (one bottle). |

Pieropan,
Soave Classico, Veneto, Italy.2002, 12.% vol.
Nino Pieropan is a perfectionist and as a result his white
wines are outstanding. This Soave Classico is not a run of
the mill Soave. It has lovely perfume and good acidity. It
is easy drinking at any time with or without food. (1 Bottle)
Laroche.
Chablis, France. 2001 12.5% Vol
South east of Paris lies the area and town of Chablis set
in a hollow surrounded by hills. From here is produced one
of the most famous wines in the world. Made from Chardonnay
grapes grown on limestone and clay this wine is full of minerals.
It is well balanced, full and typical of its reputation. Laroche
is one of the longest established and most respected of producers
but is also at the cutting edge of innovation. (I Bottle)
Jordan, Chardonnay,
Stellenbosch South Africa. 2003, 14% vol.
This close knit and dedicated family of wine makers are producing
wine of excellent quality all from grapes grown in their own
vineyard. This medal winning Chardonnay is fermented and matured
in small French oak barrels. It has a ripe intense toasty,
creamy mouthfeel complemented by fresh fruit, lime-chalky
qualities. Compare to the Chablis.
Escobera
Monastrell-Syrah, Jumilla, Spain. 2001. 13.5% Vol.
It is a hot dry climate in South East Spain with poor rocky
soils. This ensures that the grapes ripen fully. Careful winemaking
procedures are required to produce good wine with a balance
of fruit, tannin and acidity. This wine has ripe and spicy
perfumes and full rich fruit on the palate.
Wynns Coonawarra
Estate, Cabernet Sauvignon, South Australia 2000 13.5% Vol.
From the oldest established winery in Coonawarra with the
first vines being planted in 1891 comes this excellent Cabernet
Sauvignon. The wine of the excellent 2000 vintage is showing
typical minty, spicy characters on the nose followed by rich
stone fruit and tobacco on the palate with a long smooth finish.
The wine will keep and improve. It is also worth decanting
as there may be some naturally forming sediment. (I Bottle)
Paul Jaboulet
Aine, Cote du Ventoux, Les Traverses, France 2000 13% Vol.
From the Southern Rhone on the steps of Ventoux Mountain.
This fairly powerful wine is well balanced with ripe spicy
berry flavours and light tannins a round lively wine ready
for drinking now after being cellared here at Penmaenuchaf
Hall
Jordan, Merlot,
Stellenbosch, South Africa. 2002 14.5% Vol.
Prestigous wines from a neat winery. The Jordan Merlot has
stony mineral characters with lots of plum fruit seasoned
with spice and clean oak. Soft, ripe tannin finish.
Staatlicher
Hofkeller Wurzburg, Franconia, Germany. 2003 12% Vol.
From the Franken region this revelation of German wine is
scented and soft yet crisp making it eminently appealing and
drinkable. A blend of 65% Kerner, 30% Muller-Thurgau and 5%
Scheurebe the grapes are carefully selected from the ripest
on the estate. The cellars are beneath the UNESCO– listed
residence of the Upper Bavarian Prince Bishops who have produced
Franken wine for centuries. (1 Bottle) |
